The Galatians Devotional Series

Galatians Outline

I. Justification by Faith Defended (1:1-4:31)
A. Consider my credentials (1:1-2:21)
    Paul's Apostleship (1:1-24)
Paul's experience with the circumcision (2:1-21)
B. Debating that righteousness does not come by the Law(3:1-4:10)
  • Didn't you receive the Spirit by faith? (3:1-5)
  • Haven't you been justified by faith like Abraham? (3:6-14)
  • Aren't you relying on the law? (3:15-18)
  • Doesn't the Law serve a different purpose? (3:19-29)
    • It is ineffective to justify us (3:19-22)
    • Rather it leads us to Christ through conviction of sin (3:23-29)
  • Haven't you become sons of God and are no longer slaves to the law? (4:1-10)
C. Compare my labor for you versus that of the circumcision(4:12-20)
You formerly accept me, despite my affliction in the flesh.
Do you now reject me because I tell you the truth?
The group of the circumcision tries to make a good showing in the flesh
    while telling you lies.
Perhaps you have not really believed and my work has been in vain.
D. Consider a scriptural analogy (4:21-31)
Sarah - the Doctrine of justification by faith
Sarah's son Isaac - the believers in justification by faith
Hagar - the Doctrine of justification by the Law
Hagar's son Ishmael - the group of the circumcision
Ishmael persecutes Isaac - the circumcision persecutes the believers
Cast out the bondwoman with her son
cast out the doctrine and the group of the circumcision
II. Justification by Faith Applied (5:1-6:18)
Stand in Freedom (5:1-12)
  • Against the Doctrine of the Circumcision (5:1-6)
  • Against the Group of the Circumcision (5:7-12)
Walk in the Spirit against the Flesh (5:13-6:10)
  • in love (5:13-15)
  • being led by the Spirit (5:16-26)
    • not producing the fruits of the flesh (5:19-21)
    • but producing the fruits of the Spirit (5:22-26)
  • responsibly (6:1-6)
    • to those under your authority (6:1-2)
    • to yourself (6:3-5)
    • to those in authority over you (6:6)
  • with expectation of reward (6:7-10)
  • boasting in the cross, not in the flesh (6:11-18)
